For 4.000 years the wound healing properties of honey have been cleansing, absorption of oedema, antimicrobial activity, deodorisation, promotion of granulation, tissue formation, and epithilialisation and improvement of nutrition.
Like any other natural product, the composition of honey may contain contaminations. Exposing patients to this type of honey is unacceptable because of an additional risk of infection. Honey intended for medical use should be sterile and free of residues, which might make the clinical use of honey more acceptable.
